16.11.11 - Skerries Under 15's win with skill...
DLSP/Palmerston 7
Skerries 29
The win was already secured, but it was the try of the match. Sam Toft had made a bustling break up the field and after a couple of phases Luke Cullen took the ball on the 22 in tight space with the DLSP fullback closing in. A sweet check and sidestep made him a gap to squeeze through and score a fine winger’s try.
DLSP gave Skerries some hard games last year and will do so again, but this time are unable to live with the Skerries attack. On 6 minutes Ciaran Frawley runs a loop for a return and feeds Dara Coleman who opens the scoring; Frawley converts. On 16 minutes, Lorcan Jones punts ahead with the strong wind and, when chasing Fionn Geraghty is fouled near the line, the ref awards a (moderately kind) penalty try. Frawley converts. Tom Mulvaney again dominates the lineouts and Odhran Dunne and Michael O’Connor carry and support well. Scrum half Ruari Woods supplies good ball to the backs, and George Harrington has a big game at 8. The introduction of Niall McCann gives Skerries a go-forward booster and Con Marrey makes a welcome comeback.
At the end of the half Robert McKey races over in the corner to make the half time score 0-19. Some stopwatch trouble helps Skerries, as the half lasts 37 minutes and Skerries have the brisk wind behind them.
The second half opens with a try from the near gargantuan DLSP no. 8. But Skerries come back and cope well with the wind. For once Lorcan Jones doesn’t score in a game! but he tackles superbly at fullback and poses a constant attacking threat, supplying Luke Cullen for two tries, the second of which is that final try, to bring the closing score to 7-29.
The final heroic effort is whoever carried the injured Cillian O’Leary up the steep bank to his Dad’s car – let’s hope all 3 of you recover quickly!
