Skerries Maul Malahide
Malahide 7
Skerries 35
Question : What do the initials CFC stand for? Chlorofluorocarbon?
Answer: Nope, its: Ciaran Frawley Converted. He was so reliable, we need to use initials to save space.
On a beautiful crisp morning, huge flocks of geese swirled over the estuary in Malahide, as Skerries warmed up. They made a great start in the game. (Skerries, not the geese.) Lorcan Jones robbed at the breakdown, Darragh Considine sorry! Coleman! carried and George Harringon burst over to score. CFC. 0-7.
Moments later LJ and Ben Jenko interlinked along the right and were unlucky to have a foot in touch. On 8 minutes, Daniel Downing chased down a Ciaran Frawley kick and the ball went through the hands of Coleman, Jones and Harrington to release Fionn Geraghty for the second try. CFC. 0-14.
Malahide had their moments too and had a flyer in the centre. On two occasions, LLcoolJ pulled out great last-man tackles. But on 19 minutes some weak tackling in midfield gave Malahide a score under the posts. 7-14.
Skerries replied when Daniel Downing, who must be in contention for “most-improved-player”, displayed pace and nimble feet to get through several tackles and score. CFC for 7-21.
Ben O’Keeffe and Tom Mulvaney combined for a 60 metre charge up the field to cheer the crowd. Jenko foraged, Jake Deering tackled relentlessly , George H and Darragh Martin made some big hits.
In the last play of the first half, replacement scrum half Steve Smith made a quick break, and good hands by the backs freed Robert McKey to score. CFC from the touchline, cleverly bouncing the ball on the crossbar to help it over.
The second half saw flying runs from David O’Dwyer and McKey but it was George Harrington who took a second try by pouncing on a kick ahead by LJ. CFC. Again! 7-35.
The game came to an unfortunate and early stop when one of the Malahide Mums got accidentally caught up in a hard touchline tackle, and fell heavily on her shoulder. She could not be moved til an ambulance came, and the ref decided to end the game early. We hope she has a quick recovery.
Verdict: A very competent performance in a very good match.
