Skerries Rugby Youth & Mini's

The aim of this section is to provide information relating to our age grade players (6-18)

Hopefully all will find it fun and easy to use. We want our younger members to check in and contribute frequently to get, and give, information about their club and teams. Coaches and helpers are also urged to provide team reports, photos, articles, results and fixture schedules early and often.

Message from our President ‘09-’10 – Michael Murphy

I am delighted to announce the addition of a Youth/Minis section to our website. I hope all our visitors enjoy this addition and congratulate all involved in the section for the professional and caring way they train and manage our children. All our coaches have signed up to the IRFU child welfare scheme which insures a safe environment where our children can have fun learning the great game of Rugby football.

Message from our Child Welfare Officer – Susan Mulcahy

At the start of this year, the committee in Skerries Rugby Club appointed me as the clubs Child Welfare Officer. It is a very important position in the youth/mini section and the committees has given myself and Pascal Byrne (Youth Coordinator) their full support and has endorsed the IRFU Child Welfare Policy (which is available to download from IRFU.ie). The Club will continue to take child welfare issues very seriously.

After a very successful registration day at the end of August we have 155 players in our mini section and a very healthy number in our youth section. I am delighted to say that they are now all registered with the club and all matches are well underway, with a very busy schedule ahead (weather permitting). The Leinster Branch of the IRFU asked me, as Child Welfare Officer to ask each and every single one of the mini/youth coaches to read and sign the child welfare document and I am delighted to say this has been completed and all forms are now with the club and the IRFU for safekeeping.

We all have a duty to make the rugby environment safe, secure and unthreatening in order to support children playing the game.  Unfortunately even within the sport of rugby there are welfare and child protection issues.  The welfare of young players is of paramount importance to the game and should be at the forefront in all that we do.  Although it is unlikely that you will ever be in a position to be concerned about practice of others it is an unfortunate fact of life that the forms of abuse, physical, sexual, emotional, bullying and neglect, to name but a few, do occur. Prevention is certainly the best option and sharing conduct or welfare codes with parents, coaches and volunteers will assist in highlighting acceptable and unacceptable behaviours and attitudes.

If you do have any concerns it is important to understand that it is not disloyal to the players, your club or other coaches to express those concerns. Your loyalty is to the principles of safety, protection and welfare of our players at all times.

I would like to thank all the coaches for being so co-opertive and to Pascal Byrne (Youth Coordinator) and the Committee for their continued support.

I must say all the kids seem to be very happy at the moment as they await the arrival of the new pitch!!!

Good luck to all for the season.

Susan Mulcahy
Child Welfare Officer
